Sublimation on the brother SP1

Look at what arrived just in time for peach season! This sweet shirt was made by Jenn. She used her brother SP1 sublimation printer to print the design, and a heat press to transfer the design.

For anyone who may not be familiar with sublimation yet, the process is quite simple. Once the design has been printed on the sublimation printer, it is transfered to your item with heat. For clothing, sublimation works best on 100% polyester, but will also work on clothing with a high percentage of polyester as well.

You can sublimate onto other items like mugs, keychains, and more!

This six week project-based beginner-level class for adults will start the students building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Never touched a sewing machine before? No problem!

Three projects have been selected to build a strong foundation, and key sewing skills. Students will learn safe machine operation, and techniques for independent sewing. We do change projects from time to time, however if this occurs, the learning outcomes remain the same. There will be homework in between classes.

Current projects and learning outcomes:
- Pillowcase: Learn to sew long straight lines (yes, it is way harder than expected), and how to sew a french seam. This is an important technique you will use later for professionally finished garments.
- Pencil case or Toiletries Bag: Learn zipper installation, precision sewing in small spaces and adding a lining.
- PJ Pants: Pattern reading and material choice, introduction to fitting. If necessary, introduction to working with a serger (provided in class if you do not own one), and elastic installation.

Materials for all class projects are available at That Sewing Place, and come at a 15% discount with class. Please be sure to either come before class to select your materials, or speak with your teacher on the first day of class to learn appropriate material selection. Time for this is built into class.

Cost: $150 plus materials

Date: Wednesday September 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2026 from 2-4pm.

Ask the Expert!

Expert Tip: Did you know that you need to service your BERNINA buttonhole foot?

"Over time, lint and debris can build up in the tracks, which can cause the foot to retract slower. When that happens, it throws off the buttonhole balance, especially if the foot has a sensor which will cause irregular stitching. The solution? Make sure you include your buttonhole foot with your machine when you bring it in for a service, and we will automatically take care of it for you at no extra charge."

Name That Tool?

Duck billed applique scissors. These applique scissors are designed so that you don't accidentally cut your fabric when trimming applique.

By keeping the "bill" flat under the material you are trimming, it helps prevent any accidental snips and provides a neat clean cut around your applique.

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
