This project-based beginner class for youths aged 14-17 years of age will start them building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Each project has been selected to focus on a different sewing skill, which progressively builds their sewing knowledge. On completion of this class students will understand sewing machine safety and basic operation. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, but there are machines available for use in the classroom if necessary.

What to expect from the projects:

  • Pillowcase $25-$30: Straight lines (which is harder than it may seem) and french seam. French seam is a valuable technique to every sewist and can be used later in garment sewing.
  • Pencil case/Make up bag $8-$15: Installation of zippers and lining, and precision in a small space
  • Pajama Pants or shorts $25-$40: Introduction to reading a pattern and selecting the appropriate size, top-stitching, elastic installation and basic hemming.

Although we have a set curriculum, we acknowledge each students' individual learning style and needs. It is important that before moving on to the next level of projects the student meets the learning outcomes. When required, a new set of projects will be selected to continue to build their skills.

Cost: $150 plus materials available at a 15% discount.

Dates: February 13, 20, March 6, 13, 27 & April 10 2026, from 4:30-6:30

Ask the Expert!

Lisa asked: "What is the importance of seam nestling?"

Nestling seams is usually a quilting term, but it is a technique that can be applied to all different sewing applications.

It begins with the pressing of the stitched seam in one direction, not pressed open. When you alternate the direction of the seams as you are joining your pieces, the 2 seams bump together to lie flatter. With your fingers you can feel this through your fabric. If you are joining a row of squares together, you will press one row of seams in one direction, and the other in the opposite direction and now the seams are “nested” together, pinned and sewn.

This technique also works in garment sewing when two seams are joined, having each go in the opposite direction creates a flatter seam. Especially if the seams have been finished with a serger."
