This project based beginner class for children 9 to 13 years of age will start them building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Each project has been selected to focus on a different sewing skill, which progressively builds their sewing knowledge. On completion of this class students will understand sewing machine safety and basic operation. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, but there are machines available for use in the classroom if necessary.

What to expect from the projects:

Pillowcase $25-30: straight lines which is harder than expected, and French seam. French seam is a valuable technique to every sewist, especially to be used later in garment sewing.

Pencil case/makeup bag $8-15: Installation of zipper and working with lining. Precision in a small space.

Pajama Pants or shorts $25-40: Introduction to reading a pattern and choosing the appropriate size, top-stitching, elastic installation and basic hemming.

Although we have a set curriculum, we acknowledge each students' individual learning speed, style and needs. It is important that before moving on to the next level Kidstart Beginner Part 2 the student meets the learning outcomes confidently so that they are prepared to move on to more complicated projects. Should the student wish to sign up and repeat this session to solidify their skills, the teacher will choose a new set of engaging projects geared to the students' needs and interests.

Ask the Expert!

Q: I don’t want to use twill tape in my knit garment because it will be to rigid. Is there some other way to stabilize the seam so it doesn’t stretch?

A. Yes! You can certainly stabilize seams in a knit garment without making it rigid. You can use 3/8" stay tape which we carry in black or white. It is fine and has a slight give to it which makes it discreet yet effective.

If you want support that has a little more give, consider using Fuse-A-Knit, or another similar fusible interfacing for knits. This interfacing stretches one way, but non the other. So you can choose which way to cut it depending on how firmly you want it to support your seam. Cut your strips a hair wider than your seam allowance and fuse them to the wrong side of the fabric.  Use this technique on the front shoulders, (not the back) for pocket insertion, neck lines, etc."
