What's New?

Jenns Foiled Jean Jacket

We love what Jenn did with her Denim Jacket. She used foil, and cut the adhesive with her Scan'N'Cut.

Foil is a great way to customize your clothing, and not overly challenging. Once your design is cut out of the adhesive and weeded like you would with HTV, you apply it to the material, and then apply then press the foil with an iron or heat press. Peel the foil away and it will have stuck only to where you laid the adhesive!

Paper Craft with the brother Scan'N'Cut

Jenn made this 3D poster out of cardstock, and used her brother Scan'N'Cut to cut all the pieces. The design is from etsy, you can find it here.

To make the design 3d, Jenn used sticky foam and gel dots. This is such a fun technique for cards, shadow boxes and other paper craft displays.

Nicole's Ballroom Dress

Nicole is one of our students from the Intermediate Adult Sew Club. Nicole was kind enough to let us show off her latest project, this STUNNING Ballroom dress! There is nothing more satisfying than seeing an important project come together successfully, and Nicole did a lovely job on this project.

We are inspired! Can't wait to see what else you create in the future.

BERNINA Q20 Freemotion Quilting Review

It always warms our heart when we receive such a kind message from one of our cusomers. We truly want to see you succeed, and it is our passion to be part of your creative journey and help you achieve your goals.

"Where do I begin?

I called and found out that you rent your Bernina Longarm by the hour. The price is very reasonable, so I came in and was shown the machine. I love Bernina and I cannot lie???? But had never used the longarm. The day I came in for the rental, I was warmly welcomed. After showing me how to thread the machine, fill the bobbins and use the machine they turned me loose. I was able to get my queen sized quilt done in 2 visits. Jaret, Marlene and Mikaela were so very helpful and encouraging!

I would recommend this experience to anyone. Try it! You will like it and learn a whole lot! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!" - Heather

This project based beginner class for children 9 to 13 years of age will start them building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Each project has been selected to focus on a different sewing skill, which progressively builds their sewing knowledge. On completion of this class students will understand sewing machine safety and basic operation. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, but there are machines available for use in the classroom if necessary.

What to expect from the projects:

Pillowcase $25-30: straight lines which is harder than expected, and French seam. French seam is a valuable technique to every sewist, especially to be used later in garment sewing.

Pencil case/makeup bag $8-15: Installation of zipper and working with lining. Precision in a small space.

Pajama Pants or shorts $25-40: Introduction to reading a pattern and choosing the appropriate size, top-stitching, elastic installation and basic hemming.

Although we have a set curriculum, we acknowledge each students' individual learning speed, style and needs. It is important that before moving on to the next level Kidstart Beginner Part 2 the student meets the learning outcomes confidently so that they are prepared to move on to more complicated projects. Should the student wish to sign up and repeat this session to solidify their skills, the teacher will choose a new set of engaging projects geared to the students needs and interests.

This six week project-based beginner-level class for adults will start the students building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Never touched a sewing machine before? No problem!

Three projects have been selected to build a strong foundation, and key sewing skills. Students will learn safe machine operation, and techniques for independent sewing. We do change projects from time to time, however if this occurs the learning outcomes remain the same. There will be homework in between classes.

Current projects and learning outcomes:
- Pillowcase: Learn to sew long straight lines (yes, it is way harder than expected), and how to sew a french seam. This is an important technique you will use later for professionally finished garments.
- Pencil case or Toiletries Bag: Learn zipper installation, precision sewing in small spaces and adding a lining.
- PJ Pants: Pattern reading and material choice, introduction to fitting
if necessary, introduction to working with a serger (provided in class if you do not own one), and elastic installation.

Materials for all class projects are available at That Sewing Place, and come at a 15% discount with class. Please be sure to either come before class to select your materials, or speak with your teacher on the first day of class to learn appropriate material selection. Time for this is built into class.

Cost: $150 plus materials, available at a 15% discount after clcass registration.

Date: Saturday January 31, February 7, 14, 21, 28 & March 7, 2026 from 3:30-5:30pm.

Ask the Expert!

FAQ: "What happens during a full service?"

Have you ever wondered what actually goes into a full service? We begin by removing any lint, then the old grease by using solvents to break it down. This takes a long time because usually the grease is hardened, especially if the machine has not been serviced in more than five years. This seems like a simple task but takes time because if any of the old grease is left over, the machine can get gummy again, even if fresh grease is applied.

Next we clean the take up linkage. The take up linkage is the assembly that moves the needle up and down, and also pulls up your thread. Next up is a needle bar service, (feed module in brother machines and a Head/Carrier service in BERNINA machines). We then remove rough edges and burrs from hook or thread path, recondition belt tensioners, service the motor (clean out carbon dust and oil the bushing), service the thread cutter module if applicable, service the embroidery module if machine equipped (this is an seperate machine), and check a bunch of other items that may need to be touched up or cleaned while inside the machine. We then put fresh grease/oil in all the moving parts of the machine that require it. We also service your walking foot and button hole foot if needed.

Now your machine will be back together, and it is time to set adjustments. These adjustments are necessary because settings will slip over time from natural wear and tear. If adjustments are not made it will throw off how the machine feeds fabric, as well as the appearance of decorative stitches. In short, the adjustments make sure the mechanical stuff is lined up perfectly so your machine sews beautifully.

Some of the many adjustments needed are, feed dog height timing and position, hook timing, needle position, needle bar height, needle to hook clearance, ornamental balance, buttonhole balance, electronic balance if machine is equipped, auto needle threader position, electronic adjustments so your luxury features like camera, laser etc. work seamslessly, set basting mechanism if machine has it, presser foot height and orientation, bobbin winder settings, setting the top and bobbin tension.

Name That Tool?

Looking for brighter lighting in your machine? We really like the Alphasew LED Light Strip. It is easy to install, is dimmable and provides excellent light for any time of day.

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
