Jenn's Coffee mugs made with Waterslide and her brother Scan'N'Cut

Want to customize your mugs? Waterslide is a great way to do that. Waterslide decals offer a creative and cost-efficient way to personalize many surfaces including glass, wood and ceramic.

I decided to try this beginner friendly project with these humorous designs that I think everyone can relate to at some point in their lives.

First print your design on the special white or clear paper, then spray with clear acrylic spray. Next cut out your design by hand or with your cutting machine, then apply similar to how you would apply a temporary tattoo with water.

The final step would be to air dry or bake in the oven at 230 degrees for 10-15 minutes. There are endless possibilities for this easy craft.

This six week project-based beginner-level class for adults will start the students building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Never touched a sewing machine before? No problem!

Three projects have been selected to build a strong foundation, and key sewing skills. Students will learn safe machine operation, and techniques for independent sewing. We do change projects from time to time, however if this occurs the learning outcomes remain the same. There will be homework in between classes.

Current projects and learning outcomes:
- Pillowcase: Learn to sew long straight lines (yes, it is way harder than expected), and how to sew a french seam. This is an important technique you will use later for professionally finished garments.
- Pencil case or Toiletries Bag: Learn zipper installation, precision sewing in small spaces and adding a lining.
- PJ Pants: Pattern reading and material choice, introduction to fitting
if necessary, introduction to working with a serger (provided in class if you do not own one), and elastic installation.

Materials for all class projects are available at That Sewing Place, and come at a 15% discount with class. Please be sure to either come before class to select your materials, or speak with your teacher on the first day of class to learn appropriate material selection. Time for this is built into class.

Cost: $150 plus materials, which are available at a 15% discount after class registration.

Date: Tuesday September 09, 16, 23, 30 & October 07, 14 from 10:30-12:30pm.

Ask the Expert!

Jordan Asked: "Is stay stitching really that important? Doesn't it get held together when you sew the seam or serge the edges of the pattern pieces before sewing?"

Answer: This is great question, because if you go to google, you will find very mixed opinions.

In short, the answer is yes. If a pattern asks you to stay stitch, then that piece needs it. Sometimes it is good to stay stitch even if the pattern does not recommend it!

What is stay stitching though? Stay stitching is a straight line of stitching that is done on a single layer of fabric (pattern piece already being cut) to prevent stretching. Necklines, princess seams and the neck edge of a V-neck jacket are examples of where stay stitching would be suggested. A typical 4-thread serging stitch is not a substitute for a stay stitching, so make sure you stay-stitch either before or after serging the edge.

Name That Tool?

Have you used a fabric glue stick? It is as essential sewing room tool here in the shop. We have the Fabric Glue Stick which is water soluble so that it doesn't stay in your project.

Where do you use a glue stick in sewing? Use a fabric glue stick for english paper piecing, basting, or temporarily holding a hem, seam or other tricky place before sewing.

When sewing or serging it can be extremely helpful to tack tricky areas so they don't shift as you begin your seam!

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
