Student Purse Pal Show Off's

Here are some show-offs from our students that attended the Purse Pal class a few weeks ago.

It really is incredible how different a pattern can look by simply changing the material, colour or print. We always enjoy seeing the variety in projects at the end of class as the student's personality shines through their project.

Check out bag vinyl here, and find the Purse Pal pattern from Linds Handmade Designs here.

This six week project-based beginner-level class for adults will start the students building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Never touched a sewing machine before? No problem!

Three projects have been selected to build a strong foundation, and key sewing skills. Students will learn safe machine operation, and techniques for independent sewing. We do change projects from time to time, however if this occurs the learning outcomes remain the same. There will be homework in between classes.

Current projects and learning outcomes:
- Pillowcase: Learn to sew long straight lines (yes, it is way harder than expected), and how to sew a french seam. This is an important technique you will use later for professionally finished garments.
- Pencil case or Toiletries Bag: Learn zipper installation, precision sewing in small spaces and adding a lining.
- PJ Pants: Pattern reading and material choice, introduction to fitting
if necessary, introduction to working with a serger (provided in class if you do not own one), and elastic installation.

Materials for all class projects are available at That Sewing Place, and come at a 15% discount with class. Please be sure to either come before class to select your materials, or speak with your teacher on the first day of class to learn appropriate material selection. Time for this is built into class.

Cost: $150 plus materials, which are available at a 15% discount after class registration.

Date: Tuesday September 09, 16, 23, 30 & October 07, 14 from 10:30-12:30pm.

This project based beginner class for children 9 to 13 years of age will start them building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Each project has been selected to focus on a different sewing skill, which progressively builds their sewing knowledge. On completion of this class students will understand sewing machine safety and basic operation. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, but there are machines available for use in the classroom if necessary.

What to expect from the projects:

Pillowcase $25-30: straight lines which is harder than expected, and French seam. French seam is a valuable technique to every sewist, especially to be used later in garment sewing.

Pencil case/makeup bag $8-15: Installation of zipper and working with lining. Precision in a small space.

Pajama Pants or shorts $25-40: Introduction to reading a pattern and choosing the appropriate size, top-stitching, elastic installation and basic hemming.

Although we have a set curriculum, we acknowledge each students' individual learning speed, style and needs. It is important that before moving on to the next level Kidstart Beginner Part 2 the student meets the learning outcomes confidently so that they are prepared to move on to more complicated projects. Should the student wish to sign up and repeat this session to solidify their skills, the teacher will choose a new set of engaging projects geared to the students' needs and interests.

Cost: $150 plus materials, which are available at a 15% discount

Date: Tuesday September 09, 16, 23, 30 & October 7, 14, from 4:30-6:30pm.

Ask the Expert!

FAQ: "Are spool felts REALLY that important?"

Answer: Yes, they absolutely are! Spool felts stop your thread spool from over-turning. This means it helps keep your tension consistent, as well as stopping the thread from getting twisted or caught which prevents breakage.
