Waxed Canvas!

YES! We have waxed canvas! Waxed cotton originated back in the 15th century when sailors applied fish oil to their sails. In the 1920's paraffin waxed cotton came into play for clothing, and has gained popularity since then.

What can you use wazed canvas/cotton for? So many things! Use for waterproof/resistant outerwear, bags, and more.

Check out our waxed canvas here.

Why sign up for the Roxanne pants class in person vs online?

If it is the same pattern, why are we running this class in person and online? Great question.

Not everyone is comfortable online, and we had several requests for this class to also be held in person. It's a great opportunity to come in, enjoy a few hours of "sewcializing" and come away with a pair of cargo pants or shorts.

The online class is taught by Yvette, and has loads or extra information on how to adjust this pattern to fit you, and also customize it as you wish. Learn how to lengthen, shorten, and adjust the leg width. Add zippers to the outside pockets, add an inside pocket AND add a maternity panel if you desire.

Check out the in person class here, learn more about the online class here.

This six week project-based beginner-level class for adults will start the students building a solid foundation in the world of sewing. Never touched a sewing machine before? No problem!

Three projects have been selected to build a strong foundation, and key sewing skills. Students will learn safe machine operation, and techniques for independent sewing. We do change projects from time to time, however if this occurs the learning outcomes remain the same. There will be homework in between classes.

Current projects and learning outcomes:
- Pillowcase: Learn to sew long straight lines (yes, it is way harder than expected), and how to sew a french seam. This is an important technique you will use later for professionally finished garments.
- Pencil case or Toiletries Bag: Learn zipper installation, precision sewing in small spaces and adding a lining.
- PJ Pants: Pattern reading and material choice, introduction to fitting
if necessary, introduction to working with a serger (provided in class if you do not own one), and elastic installation.

Materials for all class projects are available at That Sewing Place, and come at a 15% discount with class. Please be sure to either come before class to select your materials, or speak with your teacher on the first day of class to learn appropriate material selection. Time for this is built into class.

Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, but there are machines available for use in the classroom if necessary.

Ask the Expert!

Amy asked "I just started using knits on my new serger...but the beginning of my seams keep rolling. Is there a way to stop this?"

Answer: "Hey Marie, yes there absolutely is. Originally this tip is from Yvette, which she brought out in one of her recent classes at That Sewing Place. We use a touch of glue from a water soluble fabric glue stick. We like this fabric glue stick. It is important not to have a large glob, just enough to gently tack the very beginning of the seam together, then serge as normal. It is also important not to use craft glue sticks, because they can damage your machine." - Marlene

Name That Tool?

Spray Adhesive is a very controversial topic in the sewing and creative community. It can be really handy, but also really hurtful to your machine...so which is it? Handy or Hurtful?

Generally we don't recommend spray adhesive, because most gum up your machine, and continue to cause problems after spraying...however Perfect Baste is our exception. Here is why.

Perfect Baste is a temporary fabric spray adhesive, that is great to use for quilting, sewing, crafting, applique and embroidery.

Perfect baste is:

  •     Odourless
  •     Colourless
  •     Spotless
  •     No mist
  •     Acid free
  •     Free of CFC
  •     Does not gum needles

We have used Perfect Baste to tack on a quilt back before quilting, and absolutely LOVED not using pins! So fast and easy!

Or, use to tack down an applique for an easy stitch on! Just make sure you never spray your object on, or near your machine.

Check out Perfect Baste HERE.

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
