As a quick reminder, we have our annual winter closure coming up in December, so make sure you stock up on supplies before then.

What's New

Mikaela's Caroline Shirt, but with a few edits!

Mikaela wanted to make a comfy PJ shirt from the Jalie Caroline Raglan Tee and Tunic #4346, but wanted a round neck not turtle neck, and changed the hem to be a-line, and rounded front and back. Here is how she made the changes.

She used the T-shirt neckline instead of the turtleneck that came on the long-sleeve by default. For the hem, she shortened the body slightly, then used a curved ruler to shape the new hem curving up toward the side seams.

Charmaine's Cozy Bathrobe

Charmaine used the Jalie Classic Bathrobe #2567 and Taos flannel to make this cozy bathrobe. We love this classic pattern, it is easy to sew, can be made in a variety of materials and has pockets! eho doesn't love pockets?!

Deb's Mini Iron Review

"The little Go Iron has is so perfect for any project. It might be small but it sure is mighty! There are so many great features for this little punch of magic. It has an extra long power cord for long reaches, it has steam that most little irons do not have. The heat that this mini-iron gives is incredible, and has multiple settings available. It is perfect for quilting and pressing small areas that the big iron would cause issues with, especially curves! Perfect for taking to class.

In short, this is the main iron I use now for almost everything."

A Kind Reminder. We love having in store classes, and seeing the joy from our students as they learn create and hone their sewing skills. We do need to address an important point as we move into fall classes.

Although covid is no longer a pandemic, it is cold and flu season. Regardless of what type of sickness, if it can be transmitted to another person attendance at class is not permitted, even with a mask, until you are fully recovered. Don't worry, we will make sure that we help you get caught up so you don't miss out on your lesson.

No, this is not a harsh policy. We have staff, and customers that are immune compromised, caring for elderly ones or for other reasons cannot get sick. That Sewing Place is dedicated to being a safe place for everyone.

Thank you so much for your understanding and co-operation.

- PJ Pants: Pattern reading and material choice, introduction to fitting
if necessary, introduction to working with a serger (provided in class if you do not own one), and elastic installation.

Ask the Expert!

Gabriella asked: "The sides of my bobbins keep snapping after I wind them. It never happens with sewing thread, just embroidery thread. Do you have a solution?"

"Hi Gabriella, good question. When winding thread on a household or domestic sewing machine at full speed is usually not an issue with standard cotton or polyester sewing thread. As you have experienced though, this is not the case with embroidery bobbin fill.

Bobbin fill is a finer thread and is designed this way to get more thread on a bobbin in order to stitch longer with fewer bobbin changes. However, due to the composition of the thread, during the bobbin winding process the thread stretches a bit as it is pulled through the bobbin winder tensioner onto the bobbin. A little stretch is typically not an issue. However, the faster the bobbin winder turns the more the thread stretches as it winds onto the bobbin, exerting more pressure on the sides of the bobbin. Combine that with filling a bobbin completely and this completes the recipe for what we call exploding bobbins.

The solution is simple, slow down the bobbin winding to about half speed when filling Embroidery bobbin fill or similar threads like monofilament threads used for blind hemming or quilting."

Name That Tool?

Mark-B-Gone fabric markers are a great duo for working on light and dark fabrics. The white marker only appears on the fabric after it has dried. The white is a soft mark, but can still clearly be seen. Both colours are easily removed with a damp cloth.

Why choose a wash away marker instead of chalk, or heat erase pen? Perhaps chalk will dust off too easily, or the frixion pen is too fine a point for the material you are working on.

On the left you can see the marks have just been made, but because they haven't dried are not showing well on the fabric. In the middle the marks have fully dried. The white is subtle, but still clear enough to see. On the right, all marks have been removed with a damp cloth. Even the blue mark came out beautifully from the cream fabric.

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
