Without Piano, life would b flat.

Mikaela used Jalie pattern #3355 Sweatshirt and Sweat Pants for the hoodie. The fabric used is Sweatshirt Fleece Cotton Blend Bare Knits Purple for the hoodie, and Ribknit Cotton Blend Bare Knits Purple for the ribbing. Mikaela used Glitter Flake Heat Transfer Vinyl for the design. This design was requested by a music teacher, so Mikaela used Canvas Workspace to choose the fonts and design the cut file, then the brother Scan'N'Cut SDX325 to cut the HTV.

Ask the Expert!

7 DEADLY SEWING SINS TO AVOID. DEADLY FOR YOUR MACHINE, AND YOUR BANK ACCOUNT!

There are definitely more the 7 sewing sins, but these are some of the more severe and frequently seen issues that are easy to avoid.

1.Leaving your machine in the garage, shed or even the car overnight during sub-zero (Celsius) temperatures, and then using it the next day. This is an issue because the cold causes the oil and grease in your machine to thicken, which means your machine is working double time when you're trying to use it. This can cause damage internally, and even seize the machine. Also, metal contracts in the cold, and the inside of your machine is mostly metal! When storing your machine in a garage or shed, you expose it not just to temperature which will cause you problems but also to moisture that can creep in and begin rust formation internally where you can't see it. If your machine is subjected to cold for any length of time, it is best to let your machine acclimate to the warmer conditions. After an hour at room temperature your machine should be ready to turn on and use. Turn on? That is correct. If your machine has been in frigid temperatures for any length of time then you should refrain from powering on your machine as this could cause damage to the electrical or circuit board components. Warranties do not cover this kind of damage!

2. Attaching/detaching embroidery module while machine is on. Your machine's embroidery module is a machine itself, so it is very important to have the machine turned off when adding or removing the module (this excludes some specific models that are built differently). Removing the module while the machine is turned on is like pulling out the power cord on your computer without shutting it down properly.

3. Pulling thread backwards when removing thread for a thread change. Your machine has tension discs in the thread path, which makes it a one-way operation. When you pull your thread backwards, lint from the thread gets built up and jammed in the machine, and saws into pieces of the take-up linkage, and/or thread guides. YES, even though thread is seemingly soft, it can do damage. The Grand Canyon was cut by water, same deal with thread. Once you have burrs in the metal, when you try and sew your thread will be shredded on the sharp edges and repeatedly break. Sometimes we can file or buff out the burrs, but often we have to replace parts completely which can get costly.

4. Canned air, or air compressor. PLEASE!! Please never do this. To use air safely, you need to take the machine apart in far more detail than you are safe to do so at home. In addition, canned air is cold, and will leave condensation inside your machine. Water plus metal is never a good combination. You are best to use a toothbrush (not yours) and brush out the lint in your machine regularly, OR use the mini vacuum attachments to help quickly clean out your machine as needed. Compressed air will dislodge lint from one place and push it further into your machine only to get caught somewhere else in your machine that may cause a greater problem or jam that you can't remedy.

5. Wrong oil for machine or oiling machine that does not need to be oiled or over oiling! YES, not all sewing machine oil is created equal, and not all sewing machines use the same oil. To make it more complicated, we have recently seen several machines come in damaged because their owners purchased oil that was sold as good for their machine when it was not. Never use any oil that has a cleaner built in. Just like the shampoo and conditioner all in one don't do the job, the cleaning and lubricating oil doesn't either. In fact, it can breakdown, even liquify the rubber parts in your machine.

6. Spraying adhesive on your hoop near your machine. Temporary Spray adhesive like Perfect Baste is a great tool to use for quilting or embroidery, however if you are not far enough away from your machine, the aerosol can get into the motor and cause binding/seizing. Spray that finds itself on the screen of your machine can stop the touchscreen from working properly as well!

Keep at least 5 feet away from your machine when using spray adhesive. The extra friction from adhesive getting caught in the motor causes your machine to work harder, and heat up which will certainly lead to other parts being damaged. Embroidery solution: get an old box, and spray the item inside the box. This will save time, effort, and repair cost!

7. Going past when it should be serviced. Your car needs an oil change at regular intervals right? So does your machine, and the regularity of service doesn't do only by how much the machine is used. Haven't used the machine in years? Yup, probably needs a service. When your machine sits, the Lubricants dry out, which means extra frixion when you try and use it. On the other hand, when you use your machine past the service due date, there is unnecessary wear and tear on it, which can cause serious damage.

Name That Tool?

28mm Rotary Cutter. We love using the 28mm rotary cutter for cutting patterns out with precision. Especially when working on knits or fabric that tends to slip away or not cut easily, the 28mm rotary cutter is a great solution.
