Lea's Rope Bowls

Lea used jute rope, which can be found at the dollar store or hardware store, and clothes line rope to created the stripe throughout the bowl.

She sewed both ropes together into one long strip, then started working them in to a bowl, and sewed it together. In total, to make two bowls and two hotpads, it took Lea about an hour and a half all together. This is a great hostess gift, or addition to rustic decor for the home or cottage.

Tips for success: Make sure to have a nice wide zig-zag so it catches both ropes, and opt for large needle. Lea used a universal size 100, and polyester thread. Try the Poly Core thread if you want something thin and very strong for your heavier duty projects like these bowls or bag making.

Mik's Denim Jacket

This steampunk wing design is one of a collection of gorgeous steampunk designs built into the brother PR1055X professional embroidery machine. This Jacket needed to be upcycled, and what better way then with some embroidery?!

After testing the colours out, she floated the jacket in the hoop and pinned it on the sides for extra stability. The PR1055X scanner made placing the designs precisely a breeze! We love how this turned out.

BEHIND THE SCENES...

So...the behind the scenes version didn't go quite as smoothly as expected. When scanning the jacket, it was not pinned quite flat enough and got caught which made a small tear in the jacket shoulder. She will rescue that later with another embroidery. Mikaela did her test stitch out on a material darker than the jacket. This backfired when one the colours outlining the pipes and gears didn't stand out very well. NO PROBLEM! She simply changed the colour, and embroidered that section again.

Ask the Expert!

Natalie asked: "Just made my first quilt, and am nervous to wash it. I used some bright colours and don't want them to bleed. Do you have any suggestions?"

"Many quilters prefer not to pre-wash their fabric. When working with bright fabrics especially, it is well worth it to pre wash and press your fabric before cutting it.

Next, your quilt should sit in the wash bin, or washer for as little time as possible to reduce bleeding.

Even when you take precautions, bleeding can still occur. You can try and mitigate this by using colour catchers. These sheets look like dryer sheets, which you add in the wash to soak up the dye in the wash water.

Lastly, many have found adding iodized salt or white vinegar to the washer works well to minimize or stop bleeding. For a top or from loader, add about 1/2-1 cup of regular iodized table salt into the wash, or 1/2 cup of white vinegar"
