August 2024

Already August!

August is normally a quiet month, but this month we are bursting with exciting news to share! We have THREE special events coming up that are sure to be incredibly fun, some new projects to inspire and great tips and tricks as always.

We hope you had a chance to get away this summer, or are looking forward to a getaway/stay-cation this fall. We have our annual summer closure coming up, so be sure to mark that down so you can stock up on supplies before we go. There's nothing worse then being stuck on a project right as you get into a groove working on it.

It's almost that time of year again! The shop will be closed from Saturday August 31 to Monday September 09, 2024. We resume regular hours Tuesday September 10, 2024. As many of you know, we are a small family run business, which we love. It means that we can keep in touch personally with our customers, see them and their businesses grow, and that brings us so much joy.

During our time away, we like to focus entirely on our family and honourary family. There are enough distractions these days, so rare and blessed is the time when we can turn off and be together. This means that while we are closed any order placed or messages sent will be attended to as soon as we are able to upon return to the shop. If your machine is in for repair, this closed period will not be counted as part of the expected turnaround time. On that note, we do our best to schedule things such that it should not interfere with your repair.

Once we are back, we do our best to attend to all concerns, messages and orders as promptly as possible. If you don't hear from us immediately please be patient. We haven't forgotten about you, and will be working as hard as we can to help everyone in a fair first come first served order.

Thank you for your support,

Jaret and The Seam Team

Embroidery on screen mesh

Embroider on Screen? YES! It is possible to embroider on screen. Lea did a lovely job, check out how clean this design in! The design is the Sheer and Elegant Peony Corner #2 from Embroidery Library.

Lea made this project a success by hooping the mesh, and floating Badgemaster on top.

Highland Cow Heat Transfer - Jennifer

Just love this monochromatic Highland Cow! Jenn used premium plus and glitter flake heat transfer. The designs is the Highland Cow Multilayer from Creative Fabrica. Marlene's favourite animal is a cow....so we thought why not surprise her with this sassy highland cow crewneck!

Monarch Specimen Felt Wallet - Lea

Lea used the Monarch Specimen embroidery design from Embroidery Library to embellish this grey felt wallet she had. Love the contrast of the vibrant orange on grey! This is a great way to spice up an old faithful or make a quick hostess gift.

We all learned about Monarch migration in school, but have you ever seen them in migration? The lifecycle of a butterfly is incredible. They completely liquify inside their chrysalis before turning into something new and beautiful. To add to this miracle though, the monarch butterfly migrates 3000 kilometers south to their new home.

During late august to early October, you can see monarchs in southern Ontario, one place specifically is Point Pelee. Check out more information here.

Marlene's Rose shirt from our Spring Jalie Retreat

At our Jalie Retreat in April Yvette demonstrated all sorts of sleeve adjustments that can be made to the pattern you're working on. Marlene was working on the Jalie Rose Button Down shirt, which is originally a sleeveless shirt. Generally, you cannot add a sleeve onto a sleeveless pattern without making some major adjustments, but this flowy petal sleeve is the perfect option! It is soft and sweet, and keeps your shoulders protected in the sun.

Eco Wash tips from Eucalan

We are all trying to be environmentally conscious...but what's the scoop on routine wash day? Eucalan has some great tips to help save you money AND help the planet.

"Did you know?

  • Automatic clothes washers account for about 20% of our total indoor water use.
  • You can cut back water use by at least 50% using Eucalan.
  • The solvents most commonly used by dry cleaners are perchloroethylene and petroleum. Perchloroethylene is a known toxic air pollutant, which can have catastrophic consequences on the environment:
  • Perchloroethylene can contaminate water supplies and soils, making them toxic for the animals and plants that live there.
  • Perchloroethylene also contaminates aquifers, rendering the water that we could use toxic.

Many dryer sheets contain fragrance and other chemicals that can trigger asthma and disrupt hormones. In one study, researchers tested five name brand dryer sheets. The findings showed that the dryer sheets emitted 15 endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and chemicals associated with asthma. Evidence from studies suggests that EDCs can affect developing reproductive and nervous systems, metabolism, and cancer." - Eucalan

Ask the Expert!

Expert Tip: Dull needles are significantly more hazardous on a serger than on a sewing machine, and here is why.

The needles on your serger go down between the two needle plate pins. Once the needles become dull, instead of piercing the fabric, they punch it which puts extra pressure on those guide pins. Believe it or not, that pressure can be enough to bend, or even snap off the pins. With bent guide pins, your tension will be off, and the fabric will not feed properly. To repair the machine should this damage occur will be the cost of labour, plus parts which range from $30 to $80 depending on the machine. Needles are maybe $1 each, which is much more cost efficient then repair.

Keep your needles fresh. This means changing them approximately every 6 hours of use and your machine will be happy and treat you well. - Jaret
