April 2024

April At That Sewing Place

Good day everyone! Can you believe it is already April? We hope you are having a fabulous spring. We are eagerly looking forward to our next Jalie Retreat, just a few weeks away! You could say.... we are springing towards our projects to get ready to sew with Yvette.

What's New

Tavel Patches from OESD stitched up by Marlene

Travelling this summer? Why not remember your travels with a patch of the different places you stay? Or make one as a gift for a traveller in your life. These patches are from The Travel Patches pack from OESD. There are several different patches that can be purchased together, or separately if you just want a single patch.

Sassy Socks from Jenn

Socks have become more then functional; they are now a fashion statement! And beyond buying cool socks, you can also customize your own. Jenn made these designs in canvas workspace, a free design software made by brother and used Heat Transfer Soft Foam for the design.

~

Pochi Dumpling Zipper Pouch from Lea

This is the Pochi Dumpling Zipper Pouch from SewCanShe. Check it out here. This is a great little pouch to use as a change purse, or as a gift as a makeup bag.

Children's Matching Dinosaur Hoodies

Evelyn sewed these adorable hoodies, and Jenn customized them. Heat Transfer Vinyl is a great way to customize any clothing item. We use the Brother Scan'N'Cut to cut all our vinyl, but if you already have a cutting machine then you're ready to go! In store we have a great selection of solid colours, glitter, specialty vinyl and more!

Jenn used soft foam heat transfer vinyl for the black part of the design, and pink glitter for the accent. See all Glitter Flake heat transfer vinyl here. Both designs are from Creative Fabrica.

Notice how the word "Dinosaur" is offset so it has a shadow? This is a great way to add a little interest to a design. There are different ways to achieve this effect, however Jenn decided to make the word dinosaur slightly larger so that the shadow isn't offset completely to one side of all the letters. Very cool Jenn!

Vintage Paper Teapot and Teacup - Jenn

What a delightful project to make as a gift, or as a decoration. Jenn used the Brother SDX325 to cut the card-stock, and assembled the pieces with double sided sticky tape. This design is the Vintage Teapot and Vintage Tea Cup from Dreaming Tree. Looking to make papercraft project like these? Check out the Brother Scan'N'Cut 325DX!

Dr. Seuss Quilt - Leah

We have a show off from our honourary staff Leah. She did a beautiful job on this Dr. Seuss quilt! It's just so adorable, and perfect for a child that loves to read. Oh the places this quilt will go!

Ask the Expert!

Brody asked: "I use perfect baste to float a lot of my embroidered items. My hoops are quite sticky now, what can I use to clean them easily?"

"Hello Brody, yes there absolutely is. We recommend DK5 by Odif, check it out here. It will easily remove the adhesive without leaving any residue behind. Make sure that you use this product in a well ventilated area."

Name That Tool?

We can't say enough how much we really love Flatter by Soak. Flatter is a starch free smoothing spray that is so versatile we believe everyone needs a bottle, it really is FLAT OUT FABULOUS! We use flatter for finger pressing, or pressing at the ironing board in the sewing room. Use it on any sewing project, or even just for your weekly ironing at home.

Flatter makes ironing easier and the soft mist sprayer makes for even distribution. No flaking, clogging or residue. Protects fabric to reduce and resist wrinkles, and choose between the fresh clean fragrances for enjoyable ironing.

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
