March 2024

Makers March

Spring is less then a month away, and we are counting down the days! For now, we are keeping inspired by being busy in the sewing room, which is much more predictable then this winter has been.

What's New

Bugs Bunny Patch

Have you ever struggled with making perfectly clean embroidered patches? Lea has done a lovely job on this Bugs bunny patch! The design is from Betty's Original Embroideries, and you can purchase it HERE.

There are varyious methods that can be used to achieve this clean finish. This design recommends you use two layers of tear away, however Lea has her own method.

Lea used two layers of water soluble mesh, then used two layers of iron on stabilizer (you can use what you have, but we use Presto) ironed onto one layer of quiting cotton.

Marlene Teal shirt

Marlene did a beautiful job creating this shirt. The neckline is so comfortable, and perfect for colder months when you need just a little extra coverage to keep the draft off, and the rainbow zipper is a really nice touch! She used Jalie pattern #2682 V-neck top. We would love to offer it in store for purchase, but this pattern is only available as a PDF.

If you have ever wondered about working with PDF patterns, its really not as difficult as you think. The best way to get them printed is to find a local print shop that will print them on a single large piece of paper.

A Moment of Appreciation for Two Anonymous Donors

We wanted to share this story with you because it really touched us. Last year a lovely person donated a large amount of lovely fabric. This fabric we saved to be used for those who needed it. A few months ago, a customer came in and shared that she was sewing for the homeless, and we pleased to pass on that fabric to her. She has now completed over 59 blankets which have been donated to Out Of The Cold.

In a world where everyone is struggling, we often miss seeing the little glimmers of kindness that are still being shown. There really is more joy in giving then recieving, and we feel so blessed to not only be surrounded by such wonderful generous people but also to have been able to help make the connection between donors.

Ask the Expert!

Hailey asked: "I have seen a lot of good reviews on the clamp frames versus the magnetic frames. Which is better? "

"Hi Hailey, we hear this question a lot. It really depends on the project. Neither hoop is better, but one might be better for a specific project. Clamp hoops are great for materials that can't be easily hooped like canvas. The rubber grips give you a super secure hold, and the clamp action makes hooping fast and easy. Clamp frames also come in a variety of sizes for different projects, right down to embroidering on shoes!

Magnetic hoops are great for hooping delicate or difficult items without hoop burn, plus you can re-hoop new items without taking the hoop off the machine. When working with more delicate items, put down two magnets, then smooth out the items and place the last magnets on for a perfectly smooth ready to embroider item. You can also work on thicker items like towels with ease that you would normally have to float. Magnetic frames also come in a variety of sizes for any project you want to make."
