"The Importance of Sewing", a lovely essay by one of our sewing students Abigail Mann

We are thrilled to share this very well written essay with you, and hope you love it and are as inspired as we were when we read it for the first time. Thank you, Abigail, for sharing your essay with us, and for letting us publish it in our newsletter so that everyone can enjoy it!

The Importance of Sewing

Sewing is a dying craft that young people are not eager to learn. Without sewing it would be impossible to go through any day. People take for granted how important sewing really is. When looking around a room, in a car, or literally anywhere almost everything has been sewn. Sewing is an essential art form. Some believe that sewing is an unnecessary skill in our culture today but what is true is that sewing is useful because people can easily repair things, they can create many beautiful and complicated patterns, and it is a great way to make gifts.

When someone rips, tears, or needs clothing altered or made, sewing is necessary. A tailor or seamstress are people who alter and customize clothing. Tailors specialize in designing and producing men’s clothing while seamstresses usually work with women’s clothing. These two different people can customize suits, pants, dresses, jackets and anything clothing related. Usually, women take their clothing to a seamstress for alterations and repairs to ensure that their clothing properly fits their body shape. Men, on the other hand, visit a tailor when they need their clothing mended or designed. As a result, without knowing how to sew, alterations and repairs would be impossible.

When people are proficient at sewing they are able to create beautiful products. Quilts are one of the many projects people can create with sewing.  It is possible with a few scraps of fabric to create a work of art. Another art project for a person who sews is making a wedding dress. In general, brides wish for a dress that reflects their unique personality and beauty. The same way a painter uses paint to form something beautiful, a seamstress can use fabric to design a dress that is perfect for the bride. It takes hard work and determination to develop the skill of sewing, but when people reach their goal they can dazzle the world with their amazing designs.

With the right pattern or idea it is possible to design fun and enjoyable gifts for everyone. When people are having trouble finding the perfect gift for someone else, sewing can solve that problem. As a result, presents for baby showers, Christmas, and birthdays are easily made if someone knows how to sew and follow a pattern. Often locating personal items in stores can be difficult. Finding the perfect pencil case, hair scrunchies, or jammies is now achievable with a sewing machine. Thus, it is possible to sew useful, practical, and personal projects that can fill any need. Gift hunting is no longer a problem for the active and creative seamstress because there are endless possibilities.

When one considers how many times people damage their clothes, how many stunning items people can create, and the enjoyable gifts that can be produced, it is clear that sewing is a valuable skill. If no one ever learned to sew all of humanity would be in a very different place. Believing that sewing is not important is truly a small- minded thought because, even if people never learn how to sew, everyone is still benefited by the sewing products of others all around the world.

Ask the Expert!

Joanne asked: "What is the difference between a 5.5mm machine and 9mm stitch width on a machine, and which is better?"

Answer: "This is a great question, and really important if you are looking at a new machine. In short, neither are better, just different. The first obvious different between the is that a 9mm stitch width offers you a wider stitch then a 5.5mm stitch width. With the 9mm stitch width you will love working with decorative stitches and alphabets. The other side to the 9mm stitch plate is that it offers a little less stability when working on delicate fabrics. Enter 5mm stitch plate! With less room in the width of the hole in the needle plate, this offers more stability to the fabric so it doesn't get chewed up by the machine.

When choosing a sewing machine, it is advantageous to choose one that is capable of 9mm stitch width, because you can always choose to use a straight stitch plate, or 5.5 mm stitch plate depending on the unique needs of your project."

We could really go into detail on this, however for the best explanation please check out an incredible article written by Sylvian Bergeron, from weallsew.com. See it HERE."

Name That Tool?

Sewing Clips. Why are sewing clips SO amazing? They are good for little hands, or sore arthritic hands that struggle with pins. They are great for working with thick fabrics, or layers of fabric which is especially helpful for bag makers. They hold fabrics that cannot be pinned, like vinyl, cork fabric and more.

See all clips here.
