Air1800

Brother has added a second air threading serger to their lineup!

Add a splash of professional-looking stitches with the versatile, durable AIR1800 Air Serger. The AIR1800 is an excellent addition to any sewing room and has a list of convenient features that includes an error LED indicator light that will notify when the fabric cover is open, a pair of quick-change levers for the rolled hemstitch feature, and a switch that will activate and deactivate the cutting knife. You’ll be floating on air when it comes time to change threads on the AIR1800. The threading ports are connected to the end of each looper by tubes, and at the touch of a button, a blast of air sends the threads through the loopers, so it's a cinch to change thread colors. You’ll be walking on air after adding finishing touches to your next project with the AIR1800 Air Serger.

Have you Tried the Eucalan Stain Removing Wipes?

So you are out at a special event, and realize that something has just dropped onto your dress. Possibly one of the worst feelings at the beginning of the evening!! Eucalan has made individually packaged Delicate Wash Stain Treating Towelettes just for times like these, and they work marvelously!

The shirt above is made from Raw silk, and has a good amount of deodorant left behind. Impressively, the Eucalan wipe not only took out the stain beautifully, but left absolutely no mark behind on the garment! One thing we also noticed about the wipe is how moist it is, which really allows each wipe to go a long way.

Ask the Expert!

Allison Asked: "I heard that it can cause damage to my serger if I cut the threads and run my machine to get them out, if that is correct is there a safer way to remove the threads?"

"In short yes and yes.

When you run your serger and the machine is threaded correctly, the threads are drawn from the thread spools through the machine guides to the point where a chain stitch is created.

Where the problem occurs is once the threads are cut.

Some may cut the threads to change thread colour, and then run the machine to get the threads out so they can rethread with the new colour. When the loose ends (or cut ends) are trailing through the machine as it is running, these loose ends can catch or snag on various points in the machine. Once this happens the thread(s) cinch tight causing the needles or loopers to flex, colliding into one another, usually breaking and  throwing off your machines intricate timing. The looper(s) will need to be replaced, the timing reset and more often that not the tensions rebalanced.

So for a fast and safe method to remove your threads, try the following steps.

  1. Turn your handwheel (lower right side of machine in the forward direction as indicated by the arrow (on or beside the handwheel) until the needles reach the highest point.
  2. Cut threads just above the top of your machine
  3. Now turn your handwheel backwards so the needles go from their highest point to the lowest point (turning the handwheel backwards undoes the chainstitch)
  4. Raise the presser foot and grabbing hold of the chainstitch under the presser foot, pull the thread straight out towards the back of your machine (not out the side) and your threads should just slide out with ease

If the threads don’t slide out easily try rocking the handwheel back and forth a little to see if it lets go of the thread. For machines that don’t have a tension release built into the presser foot lifter, simply pull the threads out of the left and right needle tensions and the threads should now be loose enough to slide out of the machine."
