Ask the Expert!

Alexis Asked: "What are pinking shears good for?"

The main job of pinking shears it to reduce fraying either in a finished garment or pieces to be used, or to reduce extra bulk in the seam allowance. One of our customers Anne has shared one of her favourite uses for pinking shears.

"This is especially helpful in the bodice of a dress. If you are working with a delicate material, and don’t want the seam to show through pinking shears are your new best friend. Specifically in the bust of the bodice where there will be moderate tension on the seam, it is easy to see the seam allowance ghosting through. In this case, use your pinking shears only after the seam is secure, and then press the seam allowance open for a clean finish."

Guest Expert – Anne

p.s. there is also a pinking rotary blade available for your rotary cutter, so if you find the scissors are too hard to use because of a hand injury, arthritis or other concern you can still add this technique to your skillset.

Name That Tool?

Have you ever used a glue stick with fabric? It sounds like a terrible idea, considering that last month we were talking about the danger of sewing with adhesives on the project.

We have tried and tested the Fons and Porter Fabric Glue Stick and love it. At first there was some apprehension, however after trying it there is no going back. The glue is water soluble, so once you are finished your project it washes away leaving no trace. So, what do you use a water soluble fabric glue stick for?

If you are working with knits, or other fabrics and have an area that needs to be held well, but you cant or don't want to use pins or clips, use the glue stick to tack down your fabric.

Once applied, the glue will be blue, but dries clear so you know when it is safe to sew your project.

See glue HERE
See refills HERE

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
