Ask the Expert!

This month on ask the expert, we are addressing a concern we have regarding a technique going around that could really damage your machine.

Recently, we had someone ask if we carried Elmers aerosol craft glue, to be used for basting fabric together to be sewn through.

Now, we know that you have heard us talk about adhesives before, and why not to use them for your machine but is using this glue or a similar product really that bad? The answer is yes.

Adhesive and spray adhesive that are made specifically for use with the sewing machine need to be handled with care even though they have been created to use with the machine. The reason is because any adhesive used, no matter how well it is made is still adhesive, and will inevitably get onto your needle, and into your machine. With a high quality spray like Perfect Baste that is designed not to gum the needle and be temporary, the damage is less severe when cleaned regularly, and you may never see any problems at all.

With a glue like craft glue, or aerosol craft glue, it is not designs to be used with a machine. It is designed to be a heavier duty permanent glue. The nature of this type of glue means that there will be significantly more friction on the needle, which makes your machine work harder than necessary leading to overheating. More glue on the needle means more pulling on your fabric, leading to uneven or pulled stitching, which is especially of concern when working on delicate fabric. Lastly, more glue on the needle means more permanent glue working its way into the moving parts on the inside of your machine, a technician will have to clean. This is usually noticed after the glue has become tacky or dried, causing binding, breaking and other unsavoury issues.

Jaret and The Seam Team

Name That Tool?

This self adhering thread cutter is great for machines that do not have a thread cutter built in. Easily positionable, with an adhesive on the back of the cutter that has a strong hold, so you don't have to worry that it will fall off somewhere without you knowing.
