What's New

December Charity Sew

In December we had the joy of sewing with a group of wonderful ladies and were able to complete more then 70 baby blankets to donate to the NIC Unit at Markham Stouffville Hospital. We wanted to take a moment to say thank you ever so much for your hard work and good company. For those who brought in pre-made blankets, thank you for your thoughtfulness to complete them ahead of time, you were with us in spirit.

We look forward to have the opportunity to sew with you again!

Ask the Expert!

Jen asked: "I heard machines are only supposed to last 10 years these days. Is that true?"

"Hello Jen, great question. There are a few things that come to mind to answer this question. First look at the manufacturer’s warranty. Bernina has a 20-year limited warranty, and brother a 25 year limited warranty. Other companies may vary; however, machines are built to live past their warranty.

Now having said this, for the machine to reach its peak life expectancy it is essential to use the machine for its intended use and have regular maintenance. In short, before you buy your machine learn what the limits are so you don’t overwork it, and follow a maintenance schedule recommended by the manufacturer. If this action is not taken, the life of your machine will certainly decrease.

Some machines with a 10 year warranty we see in our tech shop 30 years after they were purchased, and the are still running beautifully.

The second thing to look at is the tier of machine. An introductory budget friendly model commonly found at box stores will more easily become hard to find parts for as compared to a machine you can find at a local dealer.

All in all, for most machines they are designed to last well beyond their warranty period, especially when the proper care is taken to keep them in peak working condition."
