That Sewing Place Newsletter - September 2022

Intro

Welcome back! We can't wait to see you all in store, and look forward to seeing your new projects, and hearing your summer stories.

This month we have new products and projects, classes, and more. Grab a cup of your favourite, and hunker down for the read.

What's New

Designer Details - Little Girls Denim Vest

For that "WOW" factor, it is all in the details! Have you ever looked at a garment or item and thought how stunning it was, but couldn't put your finger on what separates a well sewn project from one that just seems to be next level and oh so polished?

It is all about the care and thought put into the little things, and we are here to critique garments, bags and other projects so that you have the inside scoop on what to look out for to elevate your projects to a new level.

Today we are looking at this adorable little girls vest, but these technique are transferable to your other projects as well.

The first up today is your serger! An essential part of your workflow, and once you are comfortable it can take up to 80% of the work off your sewing machine. Fast and clean, it makes sewing up garments a dream and looks polished and clean. Start by serging your seams together.

Next, crisp top-stitching. Always the first things noticed, you want nice crisp top-stitching. In this case Evelyn used 2 lines of top-stitching on the seams which is both decorative AND functional.

Be sure to your edgestitch foot, it is absolutely ESSENTIAL! With an edgestitch foot you can sew a perfect line of stitching right at the edge of a seam fearlessly and easily.

Doesn't the inside look beautiful? The outside even more! Below is a picture of the finished vest with snaps, faux pockets and full collar.

Want to know more? Give us a shout to find and edgestitch foot that's right for your machine!

Want more tips like these? Stay tuned, in coming newsletters we will be going over more garments and techniques like this so you can learn from the Experts.

Ask the Expert!

FAQ: "I keep hearing that I shouldn't run my domestic machine more then 3 hours a day. Thank can't be right, aren't machines made to be run?!?"

Believe it or not, yes this is true for MOST domestic machines, and here is why.

If you break down machine types into two categories, you have domestic and industrial. Most household sewing, quilting, and embroidery machines fall in to the domestic category. This in itself does not determine quality. These machines will perform a multitude of functions to satisfy most, if not all of your sewing needs day in and day out. However, the majority of home sewers are sewing for hobby or for general household needs. When sewing with a domestic sewing or embroidery machine, there is a lot of starting and stopping so your machine has time to cool down between sewing intervals.

If you are operating the embroidery portion of your machine, that is typically running more consistently without stops and starts. Your machine will get warm even under normal sewing conditions, and if you are a power user (using more than 3 hours at a time regularly, then you can expect that your machine will get hot. Extended use will generate heat faster than the motor fan can cool down and regulate your machine’s normal operating temperature. When your machine is running in peak condition (clean and lubricated), the friction of the moving parts generates heat, which causes parts to expand which leads to binding, and increased friction which means your machine is heating up beyond the expected and safe running temperature. Running your machine this way for a prolonged periods of time repeatedly will undoubtedly lead to a seized machine. This can also void your warranty because it pushes your machine beyond what it is built to do safely.

If you use your machine this way and you want to prevent from seizing, here are some preventative steps you can take to protect you machine.

1.    Stop machine from running after periods of use especially if machine has been running continuously for 3 hours.
2.    Clean out the lint build up under your needle plate and your bobbin case area frequently, (every 3- 4 bobbins you consume) and apply oil (only if instructed to do as outlined in the operators manual - or by your sewing machine dealer)
3.    Consult your local technician as to how often you should have your machine serviced based on your usage. Be honest, it only helps you!

- Jaret the Technical Expert
