New Avalana Jersey

The feel of Avalana Jersey is as soft as it is beautiful! It is light enough for summer clothing, yet it is opaque even when stretched. This is one of our favourite fabrics for that reason! You don't have to worry about the fabric being too thin and unflattering, or showing unwanted lines or colours!

Ask the Expert!

"Arghhhhh, I’m so frustrated with my cover stitch machine. Can’t they make one that automatically detects which fabric I’m using so I’m not constantly having to fiddle with the tensions to get my stitch to work and even then, after hours of fiddling, I still can’t get it right!" - Christina

Something that we’ve become used to with our computerized machines is that they automatically detect the thickness of the fabrics we are sewing, thus adapting to many fabrics. Sergers and Cover Stitch machines require their operator has at least a basic understanding on how to handle different materials, and what needles and settings they go with.

Here at That Sewing Place we have a class called Coverstitch 101. It gives you the basics to be confidant working on your new coverstitch machine! A couple of hours in class will not magically make you an expert, but it’s the perfect way to get on your way there. Threading the machine can be daunting at first, but if you spend a few minutes regularly threading your machine, it’s a great way to overcome that fear and get proficient with your machine. Soon enough it will become automatic!

Playing with different fabrics and making samples will help as well. Try adjusting your stitch sizes and thread tensions. Don't forget to change your needle to be appropriate for the fabric being used.

Once you love your machine, you will find it becomes an integral part of your sewing process, not just another machine sitting on the table/shelf. The more you use it, the more you will love it!

- Jaret the Technical Expert

Name That Tool?

Kai Professional Shears.

Of course everybody knows what shears are, but have you heard of the Kai professional shears? Forged to last a lifetime, and cut silk or several thick layers of fabric like butter, these scissors are beyond exceptional. The rubberized grip is a perfect fit on your hand, which is fitting for a shear made to last you a lifetime.

The Kai 7000 series shears are made of a high carbon, hardened stainless steel.  The addition of carbon allows for a steeper cutting angle, giving the scissor a sharper, finer edge.  The carbon allows the finer edge to last longer.  This gives the 7000 series a better ability to cut thicker fabrics and allow for easier use.

Charmaine is an avid bag maker, and has really put her Kai Scissors to the test. Check out these amazing shears and see the kind of thickness the shears will go through.

As you can see here,  the thickest part of the material is 3/8 of an inch thick! That is incredible!

What I love about them is that they cut through the THICKEST projects.  This is literally 3/8th of an inch (about 9.5mm) and it cut through no problem.  This part of the bag consists of 5 layers of vinyl, 4 layers of woven interfacing, 4 layers of cotton and a layer of fleece. - Charmaine

Until we have an opportunity to see you again! Stay healthy, stay safe!
