Ask the Expert!

Jessie Asked: "I recently read that I should be changing my sewing machine needle for every project. That seems like a waste when all I’ve done with it is hem a pair of PJs. Do I really have to use a new needle for every new item I sew? And how am I supposed to dispose of them? Is tossing them in with the regular garbage safe/environmentally friendly?"

"It’s a good idea to get into the habit of changing your needles on a regular basis, however, it doesn’t have to literally be every project, especially if you’re only doing some basic mending on a single item.

In those cases, you can keep your ‘mending’ needle in a case, in the event the next thing you sew requires a different size needle or different type of needle. We carry a few different cases that will keep your ‘rarely used’ needles in order and organized.

However, if you’re making a larger project, such as a detailed garment or accessory (bag), or other home decorating project, one that requires a lot of top-stitching or heavy fabrics, or if you’re doing an embroidery design with thousands of stitches, it’s a great idea to replace your needle for each project, so you avoid complications or damage to your textiles from a dull or bent needle.

Old, worn needles can cause a lot of issues that you may not necessarily think could be caused by a needle, such as bird’s nests on the bottom side of your seam or embroidery hoop, or tension issues that aren’t really ‘tension’ issues at all and can be resolved sometimes by simply changing the needle.

Using double sided tape, especially the ‘high tack’ kind, can not only ‘gum’ up your needle, but also push gum into your hook area, which could result in a hefty service bill, not to mention make things more difficult while sewing.

We love the Schmetz Super Needles which are coated with a special non-stick coating that will help avoid any build up of ‘gum’. Also, applying a drop of sewing machine oil, if possible (not too much as you don’t want to damage your textile), directly onto your needle, can also help prevent build up.

But changing your needle regularly, not only when one breaks or bends, is a great habit to have and in the long run, will give your machine a break and keep it very happy.

As for disposal of needles and pins, ask your pharmacist for a ‘sharps container’, or get yourself a container from the dollar store (even an old prescription bottle with a locking lid will suffice) and keep old needles in there. Empty spice tins are also a great option, and if they are large enough, you can also dispose of any blades (rotary or x-acto) in the same container if the opening is wide enough. The flip up lid is great for keeping your sharp items secure and safe while you fill them.

When full, be sure to dispose of them properly. Ask your pharmacist if you can bring them in and have them incinerated with other ‘sharps’, if possible, most will happily oblige. If that isn’t possible, check with your local by-law department and ask them how to secure them in your garbage collection.

Please don’t just ‘toss them’ in the regular garbage…rough handling can cause the container they are in to break and thus pierce through whatever bag you put them in, causing them to spill out between the house and the curb, or on to the driveway or street when they are being dumped into the truck. Who wants to accidentally walk or drive over a sharp item? Not me. The last thing you want is to potentially cause injury to a collection worker or wildlife that may eventually rummage through the garbage at the dump."
