UPDATE ON IN-PERSON CLASSES

We are so happy to start easing intro in-person sewing classes! Going forward we will have virtual, hybrid or in person classes, depending on the class.

We have been pleased to meet many new wonderful people virtually that we would not have otherwise, most of them living far away or because they could not originally make it into class. We also have family, staff and customers that are compromised, that do not wish to go back to in person classes yet. For this reason we will continue to make classes available for everyone, and every comfort level while holding tight to a high safety standard.

For in person classes we kindly require face masks be worn for the duration of the stay in the shop, and that if the student has been in contact with persons with Covid-19, has any cold or flu like symptoms (regardless of a negative rapid test) that you tune in virtually to class. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Ask the Expert!

Sarah Asked: "I see so many beautiful things made with cork fabric, but I’m intimidated to use it. It’s so expensive and I would hate to cut into it and waste it. Also, won’t it crack and peel after a while?"

"Thanks for asking that question. You’re right cork is not cheap, and those are all valid concerns.

I feel the benefits of working with good quality cork far outweigh any negative you may have experienced with lesser quality cork and makes your completed project look not only unique and higher quality, but also gives you a ‘designer’ look like nothing else.

Cork can be made into many different accessories from home décor projects to fashion accessories like wallets and handbags, accents on clothing, or a fashionable collar for your favourite canine!

"Cutting cork for the first time can be extremely intimidating because you never want to waste any of it. When I cut into my cork, I always trace my pattern on to the back, either using a chalk marker or a pen (you can use a regular pen if you want, as most ink marks will be inside and hidden from being seen on your finished project). Never mark on the cork side of your textile with anything other than chalk or an air or water-soluble ink. Because cork has no ‘grain’ (unless you have a printed pattern) you can pretty much place your pieces in any direction. The benefit of marking your backing before cutting gives you the option to move the pieces around and not waste much if anything at all. I change my ink colour if I have to re-draw my pieces. This helps avoid mistakes like cutting the wrong piece.

Smaller thin pieces of scrap is inevitable, and you may find yourself having to toss some of the waste. However, anything larger than a square inch or so can eventually be used as a supporting trim around a grommet, as a filler for an applique project, or a design feature on a bag or wallet. Using a Scan’n'Cut and the embossing tool and a small scrap of cork fabric, you can even create custom label tags for your sewing or quilting projects without going through the expense of having 50 or 100 of them made up that will take decades to use!

In the past, I’ve definitely used cork fabric that has cracked mid-assembly, and it’s beyond frustrating and disappointing. Rest assured that the cork we now sell at That Sewing Place is of superior quality and does not crack under normal use and when kept rolled up before use. It’s a product of Portugal, one of the highest quality cork fabrics manufactured and is imported into Canada by MM Cork Supply who only sells top quality textile. I’ve ‘birthed’ bags that I was sure would be a mess once it was turned right side out and have literally grabbed a handful of cork to push/pull it through a small opening that I was sure it would never go through, only to find that once right side out, not only did the cork not crack, but it bounced back to its original smoothness almost instantly and looked amazing!

Good quality cork fabric not only wears better than many leather products, but it also resists water stains, remains soft and smooth and is vegan friendly.

So go ahead and try it! Once you have, you’ll be hooked!"

- Charmaine
