Ask the Expert!

Marissa Asked: "Hello Seam Team! I am using Steam-A-Seam for the first time with my applique, do I need to stitch it down, or can I just iron it on?"

"Hello Marissa, great question! It depends actually. So Steam-A-Seam is a really unique product, because it can be washed away OR permanent, and it all depends on how you prepare it.

If you want it to only be temporary, then when you are backing your fabric with the Seam-A-Seam do NOT use steam. Now you will want to stitch your applique on, and when you wash your project it will wash away.

If you want steam a seam to be permanent,
then when backing your fabric the Steam-A-Seam make sure TO USE STEAM. Now you are ready to iron it on to set it permanently, again with steam, and stitch it down lightly or with a decorative stitch! Just make sure you use a non stick needle, so it doesn't get gummy."
