NEW PROJECTS!

Insulated Bevy Bag - Charmaine

Check out the incredibly beautiful job Charmaine has done with the Bevy Bag and Cheers to You Cork Collection! See the collection HERE.

This bag is insulated, so your wine doesn't get warm, and the two side pockets on the bag hold your wine glasses. Now, all you need is to book a day off work and get out to soak up some sunshine, and feel fine with your wine!

"I used the Bevy Bag pattern from Among Brendas Quilts. This bottle bag has an inside sleeve for an ice pack and two outer pockets where you could put some wine glasses or slim single serve beverage bottles.  The original pattern is designed for cotton fabrics with a foam interfacing, but I did change it up a because I wanted to use cork. When I went to cut it out, I didn't have quite enough, so I made the top 3rd of the outside using the Marble Splash Topaz, and used Decovil Light interfacing to give it the same stability as the cork.  I also wanted to make sure the interior was kept on the cool side, so I actually used insul-bright interfacing for the liner fabric interfacing, and the Technical Torpedo fabric (water resistant) for the ice pack sleeve. If you're not a wine drinker, this is also a great bag for taking your sparkling water to the park or on a picnic or just to the back yard so you don't have to run inside for refills." - Charmaine

Charmaine used almost all the fabrics in the collection to make this bag. The brown patterned cork is from MM Cork.

  Promos!

BERNINA's Foot of the month for June is #86, the Ruffler Foot! For June, it is 25% off. For more information, please give us a shout!

Ruffler #86 is a specialist in the simple gathering and pleating of fabrics. Thanks to its variable setting options, both pleat depth and frequency of gather can be varied. This means that Ruffler #86 can set a pleat with every stitch, every 6th stitch, or every 12th stitch, as you choose. There’s also the option of sewing without pleating, without replacing the presser foot (ruffler setting = 0).

Gathering is performed by the special gathering blade, which causes the up-and-down motion of the needle to catch a bit of fabric each time and slip it under the needle.

The result: neat, even gathering and pleats on home furnishings or garments.  The depth of the pleat can be infinitely varied by turning the adjusting screw.

Prepare your fabric!
Safety pin on the fold. The fold never washes out, and will be a permanent mark in your fabric. Therefor after washing, the safety pin will help to properly identify the original fold so it can be matched, refolded, and re-matched again.

Wash and dry your fabric. DO NOT use dryer sheets. You will use the static to your advantage later on!
Use the safety pin to match the original folds in the centre, and lay flat, creating a new fold for the front and back of your t-shirt.
Lay down your pattern pieces for the front and back of your t-shirt. Center front and center back on the new folds you have made.

If you are using swedish tracing web for your pattern pieces, smooth it onto your fabric, and the static will hold it in place. Cut out both pieces.
Fold back your fabric to original folds, and put on your sleeve and neck bend.

Now you are ready to sew!

  Beautiful Bali Batiks!

THANK YOU! We always love hearing from you, and we have had a lot of questions regarding our fabrics recently regarding where we get our fabrics from, if they are environmentally friendly, and more. We love this, because it means that you care about the environment and people who makes these lovely fabrics as much as we do!

We are conscious of where we order our fabrics from, and always strive to make sure that they are high quality and ethically sourced.

Island Batik not only brings us gorgeous fabrics, but they also take great care to ensure that the community where the fabrics are made is safe, healthy, and taken care of.

All of Island Batik's fabrics are handmade in Bali, an island in Indonesia. Every bolt is unique, and the Artisans take great care to ensure the fabric comes out true to pattern, and that the colour is bright and vibrant throughout the whole bolt.

The patterns are made using a metal stamp to apply the wax, they are then dyed, the wax is removed, and the process starts all over again depending on how complex the design is.

The fabric is then laid out to dry naturally in the sun. As for cleanup, Island Batik is serious about environmental protection. They take great care to clean and recycle water from the dye vats, as well as use recycled cardboard bolts for their fabrics.

  Ask The Expert!

Lorrie Asked: "How do knits differ from working with other fabrics on your serger, and what do I need to know?"

"Well, they are very different! There are a few really good tips to get you on your way!

One really important, but overlooked tool is using silk pins if you must pin your knits (not sewing, there are stretch needles for that!). Have you ever snapped a thread in a hand knitted sweater? If you have, you know all too well that you pop a run, and that gets out of hand very quickly. When you work with knits, it's very important that you use fine pins, preferably silk pins, so that you don't pop a run in your knits.

If you're using quilting pins, or dull pins and working hard to push them through your fabric, you may not see it immediately, but you will find out that you put holes in your fabric that eventually turn into runs. How disappointing that would be after all the hard work you went though to sew your garment.

Next, if you are working on a serger, you want to be sure to engage the differential feed.

When you use a higher number on the differential, it stops the fabric from rippling, or stretching out of shape because it feeds the fabric into the machine slightly faster then it goes out the back.

There are so many things to know with knits, but these two tips should give you a solid start." - Ute, Garment Seamstress Extraordinaire
